Who Are the SCC?

Canoeing in the Sea Cadet Corps

Canoeing is one of the most popular activities in many Units, and there is lots of opportunity to follow it for many years and gain skill, badges and those all important points!! Even if you don't have canoes at your unit you can undertake canoeing at District and Area level to gain qualifications.

Like sailing and power boating, canoeing in the Sea Cadets is based on BCU Logoguidelines set by an independent national governing body, in this case the BCU (British Canoe Union)

They have a scheme of personal skill awards, called the STAR TEST SCHEME, which caters for everyone from beginners to experts. This scheme is nationally recognised in its own right, but within the Sea Cadets, badges and points are awarded for the star test qualifications gained.

Badges Available in the SCC (click on the badge to see the details)

Because canoeing does have some dangers, cadets can only go canoeing with a qualified adult, in a supervised situation. All Sea Cadet staff who supervise canoeing have an appropriate BCU Coaching award or Sea Cadet Canoe Supervisor qualification, for which they have undertaken training and assessment.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Web PageIf you are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme canoeing can count for all the sections, this is a great way to complete sections in the award by doing a great watersport that you will thoroughly enjoy.
