District Course No. 1  

 

Introduction to Surf Kayaking- This course is to allow cadets and adults to experience kayakign in the surf. The course will include beach safety, core stability, wave selection and riding. To attend this course you should be a minimum of BCU 2* or have experience of moving water and a desire to practise your skills.

District Course No.2

BCU Paddlepower Passport / BCU 1* - For those who have never paddled before and would like to have a go.  No previous experience necessary, however this course is also ideal for those who have paddled before but are out of practice. 

The course is run using both ‘Open Canoe’ and ‘Closed Cockpit Kayaks’. 

CST (Canoe Safety Test) - This course is the first level of the canoe lifeguard programme, in which you learn various canoe rescues, safety considerations and the kit requirements for more advanced canoeing.  It is intended for cadets or adults who are already canoeists and hold their BCU 2*. No SCC uniform badge is awarded, however it does qualify cadets for 2 advancement points. This qualification is necessary for any cadet or adult trying to qualify for a BCU Canoeing award/Cadet SCC Class 4.

District Course No.3

BCU Paddlepower Discover / BCU 2*- This is an improvement course for paddlers with either the Paddlepower Passport of 1 Star award. This course will cover all aspects of the syllabus and will also include a river trip. If you reach the right standard, assessment will be undertaken.

BCU 3* (Generic)- This course is aimed at developing generic BCU 3 star kayaking skills. There are a number of BCU 3 star kayak awards including Sea Kayaking, White Water Kayak, Surf Kayak and various competition awards. This course provides a skill base to assist with all of the new kayak BCU 3 star awards and would be a good first step after completion of Paddle Power Discovery or BCU 2 star. The course will cover rolling, rescue skills, edge control, towing and offers students an opportunity to explore different Paddlecraft star options.

District Course No.4

Swimming pool training session-

This half day course aims to build paddle confidence and to develop rolling and rescue skills. A flat water roll is now a requirement for the 3 Star awards. This course will assist those looking for 3 Star assessments on the winter moving water and surf courses.

District Course No.5

BCU 3* Inland  training & / or assessment-  This course will be conducted on simple Grade 1 and 2 rivers. To attend this course you should be a minimum of BCU 2* or have experience of moving water and a desire to learn more.  The course covers all aspects of the BCU 3* syllabus, and is specifically aimed at training.  Assessments maybe run on this weekend, subject to availability, staff and candidates experience.  Accommodation will be in a Youth Hostel, hence the higher cost.  Candidates must provide and cook there own food. Full facilities, including a drying room and kitchen are available at the youth hostel.

District Regatta.

A competition open to all fully enrolled cadets within Wessex District.  To enter you must have your BCU 1* or Paddlepower Passport.  Races are held over different distances for separate categories (Junior, boys/girls and Senior boys/girls). If you do well there is the opportunity to represent the District at Area level, and gain points for your Unit towards the District Victory Cup.

District Team Training.

This day training event is held the day before the Area Regatta to allow all cadets in the district team the chance to paddle with one another.  Training is offered in racing techniques and forward paddling coaching.  Accommodation is offered at a unit for the team.  All members of the District Team are strongly encouraged to attend.
