SCC Canoe Supervisor

Please note:  the following description is specific to ‘Southern Area’ however, other areas follow the same procedures but may have different courses available.

  • Firstly you need to be able to canoe, the very minimum (according to regulations) is a BCU 1*.  However, in reality you need to have BCU 2* or be able to demonstrate canoe handling skills and rescues up to BCU 2* level.

  • You then need to attend an Area ‘SCC Grade 3’ supervisors canoe course.  These are weekend courses and after passing the course you will appear on the area ‘authorised’ canoe staff SAM.  Hence, you will be able to conduct canoeing in your unit, supervising three people on the water (very sheltered  water).

  • The SCC Grade 3 initially lasts for one year.  During this year you are expected to gain experience in your unit and on district/area courses.  All teaching hours must be logged as evidence.  You should then present yourself on a District or Area course to have your restriction lifted.

  • You can extend the number of people you can supervise up to a maximum of 5 (total) by holding an in date Canoe Safety Test and or first aid qualification.  You must also continue to log evidence of your teaching as revalidation is required every 3 years.

Alternatively staff can train to become a BCU coach, this is a nationally recognised qualification and allows you to issued BCU certificates. Further details can be found here

A complete explanation of canoeing in the cadets is available in ‘Training Instructions, Part 3, Chapter 4’ also information about qualifications needed for different grades and types of water is detailed in Training Afloat Regulations (TAR’s) chapter 5.
